I formed Bayou Magic Retrievers as a natural extension of my obsession, laborador retrievers.  I enjoy the dogs, the dog people, the training, the challenge of competition, and of course the hunts.   A duck hunt without a retriever is just another trip to the field.  Trained retrievers complete the hunt and the hunting experience.  If you are curious about the retriever games, beware - they are more addictive than any narcotic know to man, but they sure are fun.  These dogs will truly amaze you with their abilities.

I've had the pleasure of training gun dogs for myself for over 30 years.  In 1998, a dear friend gave me a pup that was sired by his yellow male, Woody.  Woody was one big handsome lab that showed a lot of intelligence and was the most powerful swimming dog I had ever seen.  The first day I saw "Peach" she was 7 weeks old and very alert.   That day I watched her without hesitation sail off of a 2 foot high sea wall into a lake and begin swimming like an old pro.  She was a keeper. 

Until Peach came along I never gave hunt tests a second thought, and I sure wasn't about to venture into the world of field trials.  However, Peach's talent and drive made me give hunt tests a try after some encouragement from friends.  Peach went 5 for 6 pursuing her AKC Senior Hunter title.  Her one bobble was handler error.  Not bad, and we had a lot of fun.  Unfortunately for Peach, Debbie and I started Wing Magic Decoys and her training was put on hold for two years.  In fact, when we stopped she was 3 for 3 going for her SH.  When we decided to have her bred, I insisted that we finish her title.  With literally one training session, she was flawless in the next test.

In late 2003, Debbie and I began thinking about getting a well-bred dog and giving the hunt tests another shot.  After a lot of pedigree research, we settled on a pup from FC AFC Cuda's Blue Ryder MH (choc) and Answered Prayer, a daughter (black) of  FC AFC Wa-Da-Go Rocky and AFC Oprah Win For Me.  I didn't really have a color criteria, but Debbie wanted a chocolate because we already had Jet, a black retired gun dog, and Peach, our yellow.  The brown ball of fur with needles for teeth quickly proved to be a quick study, and at just 4 months old he demonstrated some marking ability that would make me ask, "How did he do that?"   When Roux was close to a year old, I started getting curious about field trial derbies and found myself standing on the edge of the proverbial slippery slope.  Go to Roux's page to follow his updates, accomplishments, and other information.
